A Language Worth Celebrating
WRDF is committed to financially supporting multiple sub-projects that assist the deaf community across Papua New Guinea. As the latest piece of this support, we’ve agreed to help fund a workshop in Port Moresby. In turn, this workshop will become the springboard for regional cooperation between deaf communities, especially in developing shared materials.
This September 20 to 25 Deaf leaders from provinces across PNG will gather in Port Moresby for a foundational workshop. Many will learn for the first time that their own sign language has real, natural grammar worth celebrating. It’s a moment of discovery — not just about linguistics, but about identity itself. Participants will realize that PNGSL isn’t a lesser version of another language. It’s their language, complete and beautiful entirely on its own terms.
From One Workshop to Lasting Change

- Real resources — Bloom books and a basic PNGSL grammar guide, created with Deaf leaders, not just for them
- Wider reach — these resources shared with the Ministry of Education, opening doors for better Deaf education across the country
- Local leadership — selected participants trained to document their own language long-term, ensuring this work continues to be led by the Deaf community itself
