Reading Starts with Home
In a remote, mountainous region, children grow up speaking their own language at home. But school teaches them to read in a different language — one they’ve never spoken. Fewer than 5 in 100 people here can read. Many kids give up on school before they learn what they need for a good future.
We’re working to change that. We help communities start their own preschools. There, kids first learn to read and write in the language they already know.
Studies show this works. When kids learn to read in their home language first, it’s much easier to learn a second language later.
This past year, dozens of these community-run preschools reached hundreds of children.
This year, we’re working with local leaders to reach dozens more villages. We’re training teachers, giving out books and supplies, and supporting communities every step of the way.
This isn’t just about reading. It’s about pride. When kids see their own language in a book, they learn their language and culture matter. And when parents see their children reading well, they want even more for them. They want more schools, more chances, more hope for the future.
